. . . they definitely don't teach this in health class.

Anonymous asked: Being trans sucks... it's impossible to get a job or make any kind of money until you pass completely, but in order to pass completely most of us need surgery, which is expensive. I'm considering doing escort work to pay for my surgeries. What should I look out for in terms of safety besides the obvious (protection, etc.)

I’m sure you already have done this, but I have to say it anyway:  Please try to take an objective look at your options, and then decide whether or not escort work is right for you.  There is nothing wrong with working as an escort, but recognizing the risks as well as the benefits is a crucial aspect of decision-making.

As for safety, one of the best things you can do is to regularly get tested for STIs and keep yourself healthy.  Always use latex barriers or non-latex equivalents.  Avoid activities that put you at risk, such as unprotected oral-genital contact.

You may want to look into local laws about carrying something like pepper spray, just in case.  Taking a self-defense class may be equally helpful.  Many community centers offer them for free or on a sliding scale.  The YMCA usually offers them.

Outside of that, just use common sense.  Whenever you go out, make sure you tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.  For extended periods of time, have someone with whom you will check in regularly—and be sure you check in with them.
